The White Bear

If you ever find yourself wandering through Rickmansworth and craving an experience that blends sizzling Indian flavours with a classic British pub setting, The White Bear on Church Street is that place. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill gastropub - it’s a place where spiced curries meet pints of chilled IPA and live music echoes from the back while your naan sizzles in the tandoor.

Step through the doors and you’ll feel it - the comforting hum of conversation, the rich aroma of garlic and chilli drifting from the kitchen, and a menu that’s got more hits than a 90s playlist. Locals love it here for everything from solo weeknight bites to rowdy mixed grill feasts with friends. And honestly, it’s hard not to get hooked.

Let’s talk food. The White Bear Mix Sizzler Serves 2 is a total crowd-pleaser - a bold, smoky mix that arrives at the table sizzling hot and heavy on flavour. If you’re into spice, the Pork Chilli or the tangy Paneer Chilli brings that perfect heat-kick. Classic fans of Indian cuisine are covered too with mains like Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Kerala, or the ever-popular Chicken Biryani. And if you’re a bit of a naan fanatic, the Chilli and Garlic Naan has a cult following. Seriously.

For something different, the Mixed Grill and Momo’s combo is worth every bite, while the Chicken Jalfrezi with Brown Fried Rice gives comfort food a proper desi twist. You’ll also spot old favourites like Chicken Nuggets with Fries and Roast Beef, making it easy for picky eaters or kids to find something they’ll love. The vibe? Unpretentious, bustling, and flavour-first.

The drinks menu is just as versatile. The Greene King IPA is a classic choice for beer lovers, but the wine selection holds its own, and cocktails here go surprisingly well with a plate of sizzling seekh kebabs. And yes, the White Bear doesn't shy away from serving up spirits, dancing, and even live performances, especially on weekends when the energy is up and the crowd stays late.

As for comfort - they've got it sorted. There's outdoor seating when the sun’s out, takeaway if you want to bring the spice home, and even no-contact delivery if you’re in full-on lazy mode. Accessibility is a priority too, with a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, seating, and toilets - thoughtful touches that make it welcoming for everyone.

It’s one of those places where you might stop in for a drink and end up staying for the food. Or vice versa. Whether you're flying solo or in a group, The White Bear somehow ticks all the boxes: spicy, social, and never short on flavour.

A lovely pub with Indian and Nepali kitchen, gets full very fast on weekends so book early. Food is amazing, prices are decent and good selection of drinks. Many screens to watch games. Limited parking, but you can find some street parking in the lanes. In summer outdoor area is nice to sit in.

Recently held an annual function (one of many) here at the White Bear, and the food, service and atmosphere was excellent. Great value for money considering the amount of food that they supplied and some really tasty options.

I was looking for a local place with a great vegetarian menu and certainly this old pub is perfect. Amazing selection of Nepalese and Indian, Good selection of beers, easy parking, not too crowded or loud even with the football on in the other bar.
